Serta Mattress Reviews

The Serta Mattress Range

Serta are one of the powerhouses when it comes to mattress design, and currently sell America's favourite mattress, the Perfect Sleeper. Serta have been making mattresses since the 1930's, and are recognisable by their well known sheep logo. Widely viewed as a company that are leading from the front in terms of technological advancement, Serta mattresses come with an impressive array of features.

While all mattresses are required to meet specific fire safety regulations to limit their susceptibility to fire, Serta exceed the requirements with their FireBlocker system. This is a combination of synthetic materials that act to limit the spread of fire within the mattress. Serta's FireBlocker system does not contain any harmful chemicals. While this is a feature you never want to test, it's comforting to know that you have the best protection available, especially considering the alarming number of fires that accidentally start in the bedroom due to stray candles or cigarettes falling onto a mattress.

The Serta Comfort Quilt is a patented pattern of foam which enhances the comfort and support provided to the sleeper. The sleeper is further supported by the Continuous Support Innerspring system. In an effort to allow a spring core mattress offer the same support as a Memory Foam mattress, Serta have developed this system whereby a dense grid of very fine springs provide a figure hugging support to the sleeper. While not providing the same level of 'contour matching' as a memory foam mattress, this system provides the best 'memory foam feeling' of any spring system currently on the market.

Foam encasement is also standard on Serta mattresses; this provides enhanced support at the edge of the mattress to stop it collapsing when you sit on the edge of the bed. This feature is common throughout most high quality mattress manufacturers.

Serta mattress durability is enhanced by the StabLBase system, this steel and timber framing arrangement in the bottom of the mattress stiffens the mattress base, increasing the mattresses lifespan considerably.

Taking a closer look at the Serta bed range, the Perfect Sleeper is the standard Serta mattress, and as I mentioned, is the top selling mattress in America receiving fantastic reviews and very few complaints! This in itself is quite an achievement. What makes the Perfect Sleeper so popular is the magic combination of good quality and a low price. This is one of Serta's cheapest mattresses. The perfect sleeper line is further divided into the Grandis, the Summerlyn, the Fairmont, the Fairhaven and the Ashlyn, each with varying features and levels of firmness or support.

Next on the way up the Serta ladder is the Luxury Response range, which is further divided into the True Response and the Pure Response. These are foam top mattresses. The True Response is Serta's memory foam mattress and is up there with the better memory foam mattresses. (For a detailed guide to Memory Foam Mattresses click here). Serta uses what it calls KoolComfort memory foam, in an attempt to counter the heat build-up commonly experienced with memory foam mattresses.

The Pure Response mattress is a natural latex mattress. The latex foam behaves in a similar way to visco-elastic (memory) foam, however is not as heat sensitive and thus provides less of a 'memory' effect. However a big advantage of latex is the ease with which zones of variable stiffness can be achieved. Because it's the voids and cell structure in a latex mattress that determine its firmness, by the manufacturer simply varying the void size, the stiffness is changed. Another bonus with using latex is that the resulting mattress is hypoallergenic and resistant to bacteria, enhancing the mattresses life.

Serta's top of the line mattress is the Perfect Day. These mattresses utilise the Serta Continuous Support Innerspring core and Memory Foam top support. The Perfect Day is a great mattress, with a lot of extra features available, such as additional memory foam and latex cushions.

Serta have recently teamed up with the world renowned fashion designer Vera Wang to produce a fourth line of mattresses with an increased emphasis on style. The Vera Wang Collection includes the Signature Bridal Bed, Sequin Bed, Braid Bed, Floral Bed, and Sweetheart Bed. All provide the same level of comfort and quality as the top-end Perfect Day mattress range.

Serta also produce some great mattress toppers or mattress pads. Serta's 4 inch thick Rejuvenator is a great choice if you want to retain your exiting mattress, but feel it needs a little rejuvenation! Retailing at around the $100 mark, it's a great budget option. As well as mattress toppers Serta are now producing the Perfect Dream Toddler and Crib Mattress. Due to the fact that a lot of child growth and development happens while their asleep, a quality mattress is especially important for providing adequate support.

As well as mattresses Serta produce a parallel line of Futons. Known broadly as the Juniper Futon Mattress, this line is subdivided into the Pinehurst (6"), Chestnut (8"), Sycamore (8"), Cyprus (8"), Willow (9") and Redbug (9"). Serta's futons utilise a cotton and polyester blend called Cottonique. This ensures that Serta Futons are highly resilient.

Serta definitely make fine mattresses, with their Perfect Sleeper line being possibly the best value for money mattress available at the minute, challenged only by Simmons Beautyrest mattress. A major plus with Serta mattresses is the warranty they provide, at 30 years it provides real peace of mind. Personally I feel Serta's talents lie in producing spring core mattresses with conventional comfort layers, if I was in the market for a quality Memory Foam mattress, and willing to spend the money, I would be more inclined to go for a Tempur-Pedic model. But as with all things related to mattresses, it's a personal preference thing, and you'll have to discover for yourself what works best for you.
